The copper repousse mat is a work of art in itself. The images and symbols are taken from petroglyphs found in northeastern Utah and scientists refer to this style of cave art as Classic Vernal Style Fremont petroglyphs. As an artist, I try to imagine what the Fremont indigenous artists intended when they incised these life sized, elaborately dressed figures into the sheer canyon walls. Perhaps they are preparing for a shamanic journey to the underworld.
